Renunciation And Non-Attachment - Stumbling Blocks To Joyous Living

May 11th, 2008 Robert Posted in Advice | No Comments »

Individuals on a spiritual path eventually hear about the virtues of renunciation and non-attachment. They are told or they read that desire causes all pain and suffering. And of course, an attachment to your desires places you on an endless cycle of alternating pleasure and pain. The only solution is to renounce the flesh and live the contemplative life of the ascetic.

It is apparent that most people don’t adopt a life of asceticism. However many do renounce the many pleasures of the flesh believing they will find the spiritual path of ecstasy and salvation. They think they have conquered the erring ways of the body only to discover that life is less than it could be. They finally justify their misery by rationalizing that suffering is the spiritual path–not realizing that they are now attached to their suffering.

Sadly these people are living in a world of illusion. They have traded one set of illusions for another set. They don’t realize they have sacrificed a higher value for a lower one. They have traded what little happiness they had for a life of sacrifice and self-denial.

Why would they do this? Why would someone accept emotional pain and suffering and believe this is the spiritual path? The reason is: They totally misunderstand renunciation and non-attachment.

Misunderstanding Renunciation and Non-Attachment

In reality what most people are attached to are the negative emotions. Their negative emotions result in neurotic behavior. They become attached to people and things that cause them much grief and misery. They live soap opera lives.

You can see it in unhappy marriages, abusive relationships, broken friendships, the work environment, the economic situation, terrorism, wars, etc. I could go on and on about negative emotions and the neurotic and even psychotic behavior that result in pain and suffering.

It’s no wonder people want to renounce the insanity they see in every day life. Unfortunately they have cause and effect reversed. It isn’t the world they should renounce—but the negative emotions that result in neurotic and psychotic behavior.

They don’t realize that when they renounce the external world they are also renouncing the pleasure and ecstasy it has to offer. Sadly, they end up attached to their pain and suffering.

Spiritual Enlightenment

We’re going to cut to the core of the issue. The spiritually enlightened do not indulge in pain and suffering. They have transcended all misery. They don’t renounce the pleasures and ecstasies of life. In fact they enjoy them to the max. They have totally integrated the pleasures of the mind, body and spirit. To some they might seem quite worldly.

Here is how the spiritually enlightened live.

1.The only thing they renounce is the negative emotions and the neurotic and psychotic behavior that results from them.

2.They enjoy all life has to offer to the fullest. They sip the finest wines or spirits, have the most ecstatic sexual relationships, enjoy value for value friendships, relish the taste of good food, bathe in the delights of nature, dance, cry and soar to their favorite music, etc. They enjoy all their activities with passion and delight. They shun the anti-life philosophy of altruism. They embrace personal liberty and freedom. They live The Libertarian Way.

3.They don’t allow attachments to restrict their personal liberty and freedom. If they suffer a loss they may weep tears of sadness and mourn. However you won’t catch an enlightened one suffering years after the fact. They always return to joyous living. Their existence is too important to wallow in pain and suffering. Even though their life is their highest value–they’re not neurotically attached to it since they know they are eternal beings.

4.They won’t overindulge in food, drink or other vices. They enjoy all the good things in life but they never go beyond the point of diminishing returns. They are too enlightened to become attached to destructive behaviors.

Your solution:

Life is meant to be pleasure and ecstasy—not pain and suffering. If an activity supplies you with pleasure relish it with love and passion. Go for the gusto. Enjoy Libertarian Pleasures.

If negative emotions are plaguing you. If you suffer from guilts and fears. If external events make you feel anger or despair. Don’t renounce the world and all of its pleasures. There’s a better way to deal with all the pain, suffering and frustrations.

Begin a daily meditation program. In your meditations you want to release all the negativity that’s interfering with your enjoyment of life. You expand your power of reason and reach the higher states of awareness. You experience euphoria. Eventually the euphoria from your meditations will start to permeate all of your activities.

It really is quite simple. Release the negativity that’s holding you back. Experience all the pleasures and ecstasies life has to offer. Practice the philosophy of rational selfishness. The Libertarian Way will be yours. In fact you may become a master of life.

Robert A. Meyer has been investigating and studying economics, philosophy, psychology and metaphysics for 30 years. He realizes there are basic principles of Human Action that will help you become successful. His knowledge that life is to be lived on a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual level allowed him to discover “The Libertarian Way.” He experiences its many pleasures and ecstasies on a daily basis. http://libertarianway.com/

The Differences In Gas Cards

May 11th, 2008 TomTessin Posted in Automotive | No Comments »

If you don’t already know by now that you can save money on gas with a gas credit card then you should start looking into one. But before you start your journey and searching for the perfect card, you have to realize that all gas rebate credit cards are not created equal. I’m here today to show you differences between the cards and hopefully by the time you read this article, you’ll be able to understand which card will work best for you.

The APR

Like any credit card, all gas cards have different APRs. The APR is going to be the rate applied to your unpaid balance. This is why it’s generally important to pay off your bill in full each month so that you can avoid this. If you’re disciplined and you pay your bill off in full each month then the APR shouldn’t really matter to you.

The rewards

Even though you’re applying for a gas rewards card, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going to get the rebate back. Before you apply, you’re going to want to figure out how you’re going to get your rebates back. Some cards are going to give your rebates back in the form of points while other cards will give it back to you in cash form. This is all to your liking but most people generally want to get their rebates back in cash form.

Watch the caps

Caps are an essential part to your credit card especially if you fill up a lot. Some credit card companies only allow you to save on so much cash per year. If you plan on using your card a lot throughout the year, make sure you find out if the card is going to have a cap. Some cards have a cap and some don’t. Sometimes you may find that a card with a cap will have better rates compared to ones that don’t.

The amount you get back

This is probably the most important one in my opinion. When you’re on the lookout for your card, find out how much you’re going to get back and where you can use the card at. Some cards only allow you to use them at particular gas stations. You’ll usually be able to tell if a gas station logo is on the card itself. If there isn’t a logo, then you probably can use it at any station. Once you figure out where you can use it, find out how much you’re going to get back on each fill up. Rebates generally range anywhere from one percent to as much as five and beyond. It all depends on the card carrier.

Now that you know what to look out for when it applying, it’s important that you do your research and don’t apply for the first card that you see. Make sure that you always check out at least three to four cards before applying. If you do your research right, you can be saving a lot on gasoline in no time.

Beginning In Photography: White Balance

May 11th, 2008 MarkEden Posted in Arts and Crafts | No Comments »

Ever wonder why some photos have a yellow or blue color cast? Why did this happen? Well it has to do with how your camera sees colors in a scene. Correct white balance is one of those technical aspects of photography that is often overlooked or misunderstood. But it can have a great impact on your photos, so it is important to understand how color in photography works.

What is White Balance?

Color is measured in temperature, in units of Kelvin. Warm colors have a low degrees Kelvin, while cooler temperatures have a higher degrees Kelvin. For example, the flame of a candle has a Kelvin temperature of around 1,500, while a blue sky has a Kelvin temperature of around 9,000. The human eye is very good at adjusting for variation in color temperature. Unless the temperature of the light is very extreme a white wall will generally look white. But a camera doesn’t have a human brain behind it (yet, anyway!) and so isn’t able to make the same adjustments. The result of this is a color cast that either looks too “cold” or too “warm”.

Adjusting White Balance

The purpose of adjusting white balance is to tell your camera to either warm things up or cool things down, depending on the lighting situation. So how do we do this? Most Digital cameras have automatic and semi automatic settings. Most commonly these are:

Automatic: where your camera takes a guess at the correct white balance. In most conditions this is pretty accurate, however in tricky lighting situations it is easily fooled.

Tungsten: used for shooting under tungsten (artificial) lighting such as an indoor bulb. As this type of lighting is quite warm, the setting cools down the colors slightly.

Daylight: used for shooting outside. Colors under a sky can appear quite blue so this setting is used to warm up a scene.

Different makes of cameras also have more variations on these settings, such as for cloudy conditions and flash photography.

Manually Adjusting White Balance

In most cases, using the automatic or semi automatic settings on your camera will produce good results. But if it’s just not doing it for you, or like me you are a complete control freak, most digital cameras will allow you to manually set the white balance.

This can be done in two ways. Some cameras have a setting that will allow you to set the white balance in degrees Kelvin. To do this of course you will need to know the temperature of your light source. This is easy to find out with a few test shots. For example, if you are shooting indoors under a standard house globe, you know that the temperature of the light will be quite low. Adjust your setting to a low number and take a test shot. Then check and make adjustments as needed until the color in your images looks right.

The second method is the tried and true grey card. By holding a neutral color in front of your lens, you are essentially telling the camera what white looks like. It then adjusts all other colors accordingly. To do this you need to have your white balance setting on manual.

With all the automatic settings that digital cameras have to supposedly make our lives easier, it is easy to be lazy and let the camera do all the work. However putting in a little extra effort into learning why things work the way they do gives you the edge next time you are dealing with a tricky lighting situation and helps you improve your photography.

May 10th, 2008 AngelaB. Posted in Arts and Crafts | No Comments »

If you have any prior knowledge of fundamentals of basket weaving then the instructions for basket weaving shall seem easy for you to understand and follow. If you take it on yourself then there are many online websites that offer a complete guide on how to get started with basket weaving and that shall help to make a pretty gift basket. But if you want to learn basket weaving or making it is highly recommended that you learn weaving in a step by step method so that you have complete knowledge of the various methods and clear idea of what weaving is. To make things plain and simple, here below are instructions for basic weaving making. Nearly the entire basketry work is accomplished with the combination of 4 methods of weaving as entailed here -

COILING

What coiling does is that it uses a bunch of strings or slim rods then used to stitch into a circle form with a slim, bendable structure to build coiled baskets. Numerous types of variations of stitching types & trappings for example interlacing multicolored strings couple with silver, golden or copper metallic string could be used in the basket so as to give it an exuberant appearance. Basic materials needed are yucca, straw, pine needles, palmetto, willow, sweet-grass & few other grasses. To provide a structure to the basket -

horsehair, raffia, ash wood-splint, palmetto, devil’s claw seined willow.

TWINING

This method requires us to use 2 or more bendable structures that can give the basket a twist like form from where weaving can be started. The method of having two weavers is known as pairing. Similarly when 3 more in access of 3 structures are warped it is known as waling. If you want eminent difference then simply twin rows firmly one above the other or leave the warp open, wrapping the warp, diagonally, crossing the warp or twining plain, are among them. Day lilies, elm bark, rabbit brush, cedar bark, reed, cordage, waxed linen or some more sort of fibers can be used for twining.

WEAVING

Two sets of basics are there in woven baskets. 1st basic - inflexible spokes used in creating a warp while the 2nd basic is the more soft elements that are weaved inside and then through outside to give shape to a weft. The supplies for a woven basket could be either round or flat & the variety of supplies can be many for instance wood-splint, willow, paper & reed.

PLAITING

Plaiting, is weaving of similar elements. Weavers & stakes are the same materials. The material is woven at the correct angles in either the horizontal, diagonal or vertical direction in twill or plain weave. Plaiting too can either be closed work or open checker-work.

Those materials that have been derived from hardwoods like Maple, White Oak or Ash and then are split or beaten into shape are for flat weavers. Splint and other pounded supplies like birch bark, river-cane, paper, flat reed & yucca are applied in plaiting. With the use of such basic basket making methods and applying more variations you can create many good baskets of your choice.

The idea is to give you a small yet detailed picture that makes the whole process a lot more understandable and easier to follow. If you really have the will to learn the technique of basket making then go ahead and learn it because once you have the art with you there’s no stopping you from making one.

Printing Pictures On Canvas An Integral Part Of Life

May 10th, 2008 HughParker Posted in Arts and Crafts | No Comments »

“Printing Pictures on Canvas an integral part of life”

Photographs are an integral part of life. Thanks to photography, people can document every aspect of their life. These days, it is common to have friends who post photos of their wedding, vacation, new children, etc. on a blog or photo sharing website. Photography has certainly embraced the digital age. While digital photography has some major advantages over conventional photography, the old median should not be forgotten. And those who are not familiar with it should check out the new median of printing pictures on canvas.

The reason that the digital photography median is so popular is because most everyone has access to a digital camera in some form or other. Practically everyone has a cell phone and practically every cell phone sold today also has a digital camera embedded in it. And stand alone digital cameras and their necessary accessories like memory cards are dropping in price every single day. Digital photographs are also extremely easy to share with anyone, anywhere in the world. You do not have to wait for the photographs to be processed. Since they are digital, they are available instantly. Some cameras even have a screen so the photos can be viewed right after they are shot. Digital photographs can be posted to websites, sent through e-mails, or sent directly to another person through a chat application such as iChat.

Although digital photographs are extremely convenient in many senses, there is still something to be said about a photograph that is printed on paper, and can be held, placed in an album, or put in a frame. Most people would rather leave out bound photo albums on the coffee table in the living room for guests to peruse than leave out their computer and have a guest searching their computer for image files. Printed photographs are also much more appropriate to give as gifts. Although e-mailing somebody a photograph is a thoughtful gesture, I don’t think anyone would consider it to be a gift. A new and exciting median that is especially appropriate for gift giving is printing pictures on canvas. It is now possible to take almost any digital photograph and place it on the same material that one might find an elegant oil painting painted on. All printing pictures on canvas are done by hand. That is, all the sealing and stretching is done by hand.

Besides being a neat and unique gift, photographs on this median can last as long as one hundred years when kept in museum conditions. That is much longer than any print photograph will last. Even digital files can become corrupted. And hard drives can break and burn out. Most computers can barely last a couple of years, let alone one hundred years!

To have a picture converted into this median can be done for as little as twenty-five dollars for an eight-inch by ten-inch picture. A twenty-inch by thirty-four inch picture cost approximately one hundred dollars. That’s only one dollar per year for a picture that will last a century.

Determining Your Miles Per Gallon

May 10th, 2008 TomTessin Posted in Automotive | No Comments »

In today’s rough economy and high gas prices, some people often wonder how they can save in many areas especially when it comes to gas prices. A lot of people often don’t’ realize how important it is to drive a certain way to save on gas. Driving habits alone can save you a ton of money each year. Today, I’m going to show you how you can determine your miles per gallon or MPG and how you can analyze your driving habits.

Step #1 – Analyze your driving habits

If you tend to drive the same route each day to work, school, etc, try and pay attention to the roads your drive on. Do you drive on a lot of freeways or do you drive on a lot of rural roads? The reason this is so important is if you pay close attention your car’s mpg, it’s going to differentiate on the highway and rural roads. The reason this is different is because on a highway you tend to not stop as often as a rural road that contains stop signs and traffic lights.

Step #2 – Let’s look at the car

One of things you’re going to have to know when it comes to figuring out your MPG is how many gallons your gas tank is. In the future, this will give you a good idea on how far you can travel until you get close to empty. It isn’t a really important step but it’s always nice to know.

Figuring out the MPG

Now comes the fun part where we will determine the MPG. The next time you fill up at the pump; make sure that you reset one of your trip odometers so it’s reads 0. This is going to be important because we are going to want to know how long we have travelled until our next fill up. Regardless of how long you drive, it’s the mileage and the gallons you fill up with that are important. Below I’m going to show you the simple math in order to find out the MPG.

The next time you fill up, you’re going to want to write these two important numbers down –

The miles you drove and how many gallons you filled up with at the pump. This will be displayed on the pump. I wrote a simple exercise below to help you understand how that process works.

Let’s say you drove 300 miles and you filled up 10 gallons worth of gas. I’m making the numbers even so it’s easier to understand. When you fill up, you’ll probably have something along the lines of 10.223 gallons. It’s always best just to round off. Now we are going to take the miles driven which is 300 and divide this by the gallons which is 10. The result we get is 30. This number is the MPGs.

This number is going to change every time you fill up but it shouldn’t change much. You will only see a big difference if you drive 100% highway one fill up and all side streets the next fill up. Either way now you should know how to calculate the MPG and learn what streets work on saving you more money!

Save on money with gas cards and find more of Tom’s work at FINDgascards.
